People talk about cancer like it’s some kind of invader. A parasite. An alien landing in our body.

But no. That’s giving cancer way too much credit. The truth is worse.

Cancer cells aren’t strangers. They’re family. They’re our own cells – but with a dark side.

At first, they behave like good kids. They follow the rules, they grow when they should, they die when it’s time.

And then one day… they wake up and choose violence.

You know how some days you feel great, full of joy and ready to help the world — and other days, you’d fight a tree for breathing too loud? 

Yeah. Cancer cells are like that. But instead of yelling at plants, they start dividing uncontrollably, hiding from the immune system, and throwing a wild party with glucose and oxygen.

So how do these cells go rogue in the first place?

Scientists have a couple of ideas:

Theory 1: The Yogurt Ferment (aka the Cancer Stem Cell Theory)​

This theory says that some cancer cells act like the ferment you use to make yogurt. You just need one spoon of it — small, quiet, almost innocent – and boom, it turns the whole pot of milk into something completely different.

Cancer stem cells behave in a similar way. They don’t make much noise, and they’re not always easy to spot. They can stay silent for a long time, doing absolutely nothing. But when the environment is just right – when the “milk” shows up – they activate, multiply, and recreate the entire tumor from scratch.

And here’s the scary part: scientists have found solid evidence for this in colon cancer. So this isn’t just a cute idea – it’s real, and it’s serious. 

 

These cells are tough, clever, and hard to kill. Regular treatments might reduce the tumor, but if the cancer stem cells are still there, they can just start the process all over again.

 

It’s like when extinguishing a fire, you put out most of the flames, but if even one little ember stays alive in the ashes, it can reignite the whole fire.

That’s why many scientists support this theory: it helps explain why some treatments don’t work forever. You can destroy most of the tumor, but if you don’t get rid of these cells, it’s just a matter of time before they multiply again – quietly, efficiently, and without warning.

 

And then there’s another theory, slightly messier and far more glittery.

Theory 2: The Overdressed Wedding Guest (aka the Mutation Collector) 

Picture this: a woman arrives at a wedding. She looks lovely. Simple dress, classic heels, subtle makeup. She blends in perfectly. A cell, behaving like a proper cell.

But weddings are long. And strange things start to happen.

Normal cell start accumulating and wearing diverse types of cloth which finally make it to transform into a cancer cell.

Picture this: a woman arrives at a wedding. She looks lovely. Simple dress, classic heels, subtle makeup. She blends in perfectly. A cell, behaving like a proper cell.

But weddings are long. And strange things start to happen.

First, she slips on a pair of glittery boots. Odd choice, but maybe her feet hurt. Still acceptable.
Then she adds bright pink gloves. Bit much, but hey – maybe she’s cold.


Next, an oversized feathered hat. Then a glow-in-the-dark necklace. Then a neon boa.
Each accessory alone is questionable, but not dramatic.

She’s still the same woman… but somehow no longer appropriate to the party.

 

This is how cancer can begin.

Each accessory is a mutation – a small change in the cell’s DNA. Maybe it affects growth. Or survival. Or how it responds to stress. Taken one by one, these changes don’t look dangerous. But stacked together, they quietly shift the cell’s identity. 

And then comes the twist: it’s not just how she looks – it’s how she moves.
Suddenly, she’s dancing on tables. Singing over the band. Demanding champagne from someone else’s grandmother.

 

Those are the epigenetic mutations – changes not in the DNA code, but in how the cell behaves. Same genome, different vibes. Like switching from opera to karaoke.

 

Now she’s no longer blending in. She’s calling attention to herself.
Not because she’s loud – but because she’s different. And she doesn’t care about the wedding rules anymore.

 

This is what the mutation accumulation theory says:

Cancer isn’t born wild – it becomes wild, one small accessory at a time, one new behavior layered on another.

And by the time anyone notices? The cell – like our wedding guest – is already leading her own party. With no intention of leaving.

So whether it’s the silent yogurt ferment or the glitter-loving wedding guest, cancer cells don’t just appear out of nowhere. They start as one of us.
And once they’ve transformed? Good luck getting them to leave the party.
